Meet Shea Kerwood, Creative Director and Sports Enthusiast Getting Back on His Feet Post Injury with Thermotex

Introducing Shea Kerwood, a Calgary-based Creative Director who’s passionate about elevating brands and supporting the people behind them. After an unfortunate series of sports-related injuries, Shea is excited to be well on his way to a full recovery. Hear more about his take on ‘wellness’ and how Thermotex is enhancing it.

Tell us a bit about your professional and personal past and present?

I’m a born-and-raised Calgarian, and I got my professional start as a graphic designer with a large agency. Fast-forward to today and I’m Creative Director at Brandsmith, a branding and marketing agency I founded in 2015. In my downtime, I’m all about playing sports (especially hockey) and staying active.

What do you love most about what you do?

I feel fortunate to not only develop meaningful and engaging brands, but also collaborate with the people behind them. I love having the opportunity to learn something new each day, whether it’s about entrepreneurial life, a client’s story or an industry development. The most rewarding part of my work has been building a strong team of amazing and talented people.

How do you get ready for the day?

I usually start my day with a smoothie and a cup of coffee with my fiancé. We’ve also started drinking celery juice every morning. From there, I get ready to head to the office and just go for it!

Let’s talk about the pain you’ve been dealing with. How did it start?

I’ve been a bit unfortunate over the past few years when it comes to sport-related injuries. About 2.5 years ago, I fell into the boards while playing hockey and broke my left leg quite severely. It required intensive surgery, which left me with a rod through my fibula and a number of screws in my leg – it was all very painful. More recently, I broke my other leg playing hockey. The break wasn’t nearly as severe this time, but it was still very disruptive to my mobility and everyday life.

How about your methodology/treatment plan for pain?

After the initial swelling went down (and consulting with my surgeon after the first injury), I started to introduce heat with Thermotex for healing and pain-relief purposes. I also go to physiotherapy to support my overall recovery and strength-building. Because the muscles have atrophied after being in an air cast for so long, my leg is usually pretty sore after my appointments – using the Platinum really eases the pain.

At each stage in my healing – with both injuries – my surgeon and physiotherapist have been pleased with how quickly I’ve recovered. I’m relatively health-focused in general, so I think my lifestyle in combination with the Thermotex is what’s gotten me back on my feet so quickly.

How has Thermotex supported you with your pain?

My pain has been excruciating at some points. Although I inevitably had to take pain medication throughout my recovery, Thermotex has been helpful in speeding it up and lowering my pain levels.

I actually first started using Thermotex long before the first injury. The pad is great for post-workout recovery – flushing lactic acid and soothing any sore muscles. I’m slowly starting to get back to working out, so I have continued to use it frequently throughout the week. I’ve also used it to relieve back and stomach pain.

In your opinion, what are some of the benefits of far infrared when compared to other treatment options?

When I feel less than 100%, I’m more mindful and more eager to build healthy habits, and Thermotex fits into that framework nicely. I love the fact that it has the power to stimulate blood flow. With Thermotex’s infrared treatment specifically, it’s so easy to use as opposed to preparing a hot water bottle or microwaving heat packs. I keep the Platinum plugged in beside my bed and turn it on while I’m watching T.V. It’s convenient, simple and you get results – it really makes the benefits of infrared accessible.

What does ‘wellness’ mean to you?

Wellness is about being conscious. It’s easy for people to get caught up in the motions of their everyday lives, whether that’s being busy at work or taking care of their families. I’m trying to be more deliberate about listening to my body and taking note of what I’m doing when I feel my best. To me, it also means being not only healthy, but happy.

What’s exciting and on the horizon for you?

My fiancé and I are getting married soon, so I’d like to be in great shape for that! With summer around the corner, I can’t wait to start exercising, running and playing sports at full exertion again, and I’m excited to see what’s next for Brandsmith.
