Dr. Lori Shemek Shares Her Passion for Empowering Others and Her Own Battle with Pain & Inflammation
Meet Dr. Lori Shemek – she’s not only a leading health expert and nutritionist, but also a bestselling author and radio host. You may even recognize her from CBS’s Emmy Award winning ‘The Doctors.’ Inspired by early events in her life, Lori has dedicated her career to empowering others to optimize their health. Learn more about Lori’s story, her own battle with pain and inflammation, and how Thermotex became a vital part of her wellness regimen.
Tell us a bit about your professional and personal past and present?
I was raised by a single mother, and I was the eldest of three younger brothers of whom I took care of. My mother suffered a constant stream of different health conditions combined with no husband, very little income and chronic stress. She was estranged from her family, was verging on obesity and smoked heavily, and her health dwindled slowly. I knew – even as a young girl – that she could make different choices and change life for us all. She never did. She felt as though she had no choice, and this was her lot in life. Sadly, my mother died at the very young age of 36, leaving behind three young children with nowhere to go.
Because of my mother’s suffering and challenges, I decided to help others learn that they do have choices in life. I received my doctorate in counseling psychology. I counseled at-risk families for a non-profit and eventually became their vice-president. I knew I also wanted to pursue my other passion, which was helping others optimize their health. I noticed that the lives of my clients’ families changed when their diet changed. I went back to school and became a nutritionist and life coach.
I then combined all my education and my passion for helping others to form my company, HealthWorks. I have written two books that help to reduce low-level inflammation, and currently, I am writing my third book set to come out late summer 2019. You can also find me authoring articles and in a variety of media outlets, speaking at events, and personalized health or weight loss coaching.
What do you love most about what you do?
I love helping others optimize their health and weight – it then becomes a win-win for both of us. When people know what to do, they typically do it. However, many do not have any knowledge, or they believe what they have seen in the media, etc. I love guiding people to the optimal solutions for them.
How do you get ready for the day?
As soon as I awaken, I think of the things I am grateful for in my life. It may be something very simple, silly or profound, but research shows that expressing gratitude changes our health and those who practice daily are healthier and happier. I have coffee, take my dog Tessa for a 2-mile walk, work and also do intermittent fasting, so I delay my first meal until around 11 a.m.
Let’s talk about your personal experience with knee pain and inflammation. How did your pain start?
I was an avid runner for years. I was not an athlete but ran 4-5 miles daily, 5 times a week. I believe that continual pounding took its toll on my poor knees, and one day, I had to give up the exercise that I loved so much. I eventually changed to using cardio machines such as the elliptical for high intensity interval training (HIIT) or using my own body weight for cardio purposes.
How about your methodology/treatment plan for pain and inflammation?
My knees felt better once I stopped running, but even after stopping, I tore both of my knee meniscuses, which left me in serious pain. They healed, but the residual arthritis reared its head every day. I was thrilled to find Thermotex and its ability to help heal.
Can you tell us a bit about the link between inflammation and pain?
We’ve all experienced acute inflammation. Think of that sprained, swollen ankle, that cut on your finger, or that miserable head cold. Inflammation makes its presence known in a rather loud, unmistakable way; it hurts, it can be swollen, and it’s often warm to the touch. This is acute inflammation (which in some cases can become chronic), and it is a beneficial and necessary part of our immune system.
When inflammation doesn’t heal, but instead continues to spew out low levels of inflammatory compounds, it becomes chronic or silent. This is an unhealthy inflammatory over-response that can linger for months to years or never heals.
This silent, continual process of inflammation is the core cause of most illness, disease, faster-aging and weight gain. A powerful tool to combat this chronic inflammation such as knee pain, comes not from the pharmacy, but from the antioxidants and other micro-nutrients in our foods. This balance has a powerful effect upon our health and longevity. There is so much we can do to help prevent, treat, and heal. We are always at choice.

This book will help guide readers through all areas of lower-carb living, which optimizes cellular health, leads to better overall health, brain health, metabolic health, and fixes those broken metabolisms that so many are fighting each day.
I also have a 12 Week Course that will be out soon called ‘The Body Essentia Program.’ It’s a life transformation program to complete health that will address core, underlying issues and allow true change to occur.
